LIONEL MESSI ON 2026 WORLD CUP AND ADAPTING TO MLS


 

Lionel Messi has played in five World Cups, and if he joins a sixth, it would set a new record.

Now playing with Inter Miami, Messi says he’s focusing on “living day by day” without planning too far ahead. Before deciding on whether to join the 2026 World Cup, he wants to see how he feels, explaining, “a lot can happen in football.”

Messi shared, “I don’t know; people ask me this a lot, especially in Argentina. I hope to finish this season strong, then have a good pre-season, which I missed last year with all the traveling. After that, I’ll see how I feel,” he told 433 in an interview.

He added, “I know 2026 isn’t too far away, but a lot can change, and I’m trying to live each day without thinking about it too much.”

Messi, who turned 37 in June, has scored 20 goals and made 16 assists in the regular season with Inter Miami. He’s enjoying his time in Miami and doesn’t have long-term plans, though he’s ruled out becoming a coach.

“I don’t see myself as a coach. I focus more on what’s happening now—training, playing, and enjoying myself,” he explained.

Messi also spoke about adjusting to the MLS after joining in June 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain.

“My style changed a bit because of my age and situation. I’ve adapted to the league, and I felt comfortable right from the start,” he said.

Since joining Inter Miami, he’s helped the team win their first trophy, the Leagues Cup. This, he said, was “special” for him and his teammates, and now he hopes to compete for the MLS Cup as well.

Outside of football, Messi likes playing padel, basketball, and tennis, though he prefers padel. In Miami, he’s also reconnected with former teammates Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.

Reflecting on his career, he described winning the 2022 World Cup as “the biggest dream” he’s ever had.
